The weather’s warming up and if you’re looking for cute summer outfit ideas, you’ve come to the right place! In this post, I share my favourite ideas for the warmer months. The good news is that most of these suggestions are timeless, but I’ve also thrown in a few on-trend options towards the end. Let’s get started!
The quintessential summer outfit: the floral dress
It seems so appropriate to start with this humble option that never goes out of style. I like to look at Emily Schuman from Cupcakes and Cashmere, model and actress Molly Sims and supermodel Miranda Kerr for floral dress inspiration. Yes, these ladies love to wear high-end brands that everyday people can’t afford, but I don’t let this deter me! Mainstream brands like Zara, ASOS and H&M sometimes copy these designs, so we get a similar look without the hefty price tag.
Here are some of my favourite floral dress looks.
The supermodel mum shows us how to spruce up a casual summer dress for a special day time event. You could easily make these outfits more casual with white sneakers or a pair of flat sandals.
Both photos are from Emily’s lovely blog Cupcakes and Cashmere. Emily shows that you can accentuate your waist in a summer dress by adding a waist belt. It also helps break up the outfit. Once again, you could easily give either outfit a casual feel by wearing sneakers!
To the left, Molly show us how we can wear a midi floral dress to a wedding or summer soiree. On the right Molly shows us how we can be trendy but comfortable whilst out and about on a hot day.
Floral dress with ankle boots
This is an easy way to achieve an understated glamorous look. To the left we have Victoria’s Secret Angel Candice Swanepoel show us how to do rock a modest look appropriate for the office, and to the right we have a look that’s cute enough for a dinner with the girls.
The classic summer outfit suggestions
All of the cute summer outfit ideas I’ve listed below are timeless. They rarely go out of fashion, which is good for your bank account and the environment.
Black and White
One of the most simple looks you could possibly do. If you’re ever in doubt on what to wear, this is always a fail safe option.
The Shirt Dress
The great thing about the shirt dress is that it is so versatile. Reese Witherspoon shows us how to wear one for brunch with the girls or a family lunch. You could easily dress them up by adding a neutral heel and a bright lip.
Shorts and a singlet
The quintessential summer outfit for any ridiculously hot day. Wear with sneakers if you’re doing a lot of walking, or sandals if it’s just too hot.
The new classic summer outfit
The slip dress has had a comeback as of late and it’s here to stay. Personally, it’s always been a staple item in my summer wardrobe for years. Rosie’s shown us how to wear it casually on the left. To the right she has made a plain black slip sexy by using a belt to accentuate her waist.
There are millions of ways you can dress a slip dress up or down. Dress it down with a denim jacket and sneakers, or dress it up with a statement heel.
The Polkadot Dress
Has this ever gone out of fashion? I don’t think so. There are so many different ways you can wear polkadot, as demonstrated below. And just for fun, I’ve added a photo of my favourite old Hollywood actress, Rita Hayworth, wearing a polkadot dress in capri in 1950. I’ve also added a photo of the famous brown and white polkadot dress Julia Roberts wore in Pretty Woman.
Summer seems like the most appropriate time to wear an all white outfit. Make a statement by adding a pop of colour via statement earrings, a bright lip or heels.
The maxi skirt and singlet
You cannot go wrong with this cute summer outfit idea. Wearing a colourful maxi skirt with a plain singlet or t-shirt is a casual way to make a statement: the skirt does all the talking.
You could easily take either outfit below from day to night by adding a strappy heel.
This look has been in since the 70’s. I feel as if it’s having a ‘moment’ right now, but once it passes I think it’ll still be in!
The Skirt and T-shirt combo
This look is so versatile. Wear a printed top with a plain skirt, vice versa!
I hope this post has given you some good inspiration for cute and timeless summer outfits!
