10 summer dresses for $20 or under

I love budget fashion and I don’t spend much on clothes. I’ve always been good at saving so my main motivation to shop on a budget isn’t to save money. With how fast trends change, I don’t see the point of spending too much on clothes. Also, I’m quite clumsy. I constantly spill things or wonder how on earth I managed to stain my clothes!

Do inexpensive clothes last long?

A lot of people say less expensive clothes don’t last long. To be honest, some do, others don’t. You need to be wise about the materials you purchase. Cotton, Linen and Viscose are good options, but they aren’t all created equal. You only really know once you touch the material. Polyester is my least favourite material to wear in Summer; it doesn’t take long for it to smell and often this smell is so hard to get rid of. However, it’s so hard to avoid!

Despite the above, my clothes last longer because I hand wash them. By doing this, my clothes don’t shrink. It may seem strange that I’m a Gen Y’er who hand washes their clothes. Growing up, I was very close to my grandmother (or Baka as we say in Croatian). I used to talk to her as she washed her clothes by hand. She did this so that they would last longer, so it’s quite normal to me. My grandmother was born a few years before World War 2 started and I feel like people from her generation take care of something for a lot longer and will make the most of something until the very end.

Another reason why I’ve conscious of my clothes shrinking is because I’m tall and it’s hard to find stuff that is just above the knee, so when I do, I want to to have it for as long as I can.

I do put some things in the wash. For example, I have an oversized denim jacket that I’ll throw in the washing machine.

What are the best budget-friendly clothing stores?

I have a list of budget friendly places that I enjoy buying clothes at. My favourites are Big W, H&M (unfortunately they don’t have an Australian website), Kmart, Cotton On, Target and Best and Less. I don’t buy all my clothes from these places (I really like Zara, Sportsgirl and Myer stocks a lot of good Aussie Brands), but I feel I’ve nutted down which stores do budget fashion really well.

You need to be quick!

I’ve noticed the smaller sizes at the above shops, in particular Kmart and Big W, sell out really fast. They’re even hard to get a hold of online! Chances are that when this post goes live, some of the stuff will probably already be sold out. Never fear, the aim of this post is to give you some insight into the brands that produce great pieces at affordable prices.

Without further ado, I’ve put together 10 summer dresses that are $20 or under. I would wear most of these with a faux leather jacket, or a light or dark denim jacket. And don’t forget – wearing sneakers with a dress is still all the rage, so don’t be afraid to think outside the box with your footwear!

I hope you enjoyed these budget friendly options!
