What to wear with leggings

Anyone who knows me well will know that I rarely wear jeans or pants and that I wear leggings instead. So, it’s safe to say that I’m pretty good at figuring out what to wear with leggings.

Leggings can be a little unflattering if you don’t wear them right, but it also depends on your body type. I’ve realised that for my body type, there is an ‘art’ to wearing them! Read on to find out what this is.

But first, let’s be clear

What are leggings?

In the context of this post, leggings (or tights as some people call them in Australia), are not stockings. I have come to realise that some people think leggings and stockings are the same thing, however here they are not.

I would not wear stockings as pants, but as you will soon see, leggings can be worn as a substitute to pants if you play your cards right.

Length is important

The number one thing you need to consider when wearing leggings is the length of your top or shirt. It must be long enough to meet the point in the image below.

Long tops are key

When looking for shirts and tops to wear with leggings, you will need to look for something that is longer than your average top.

Also, you need to take into consideration the length of your torso. Using my self as an example, I don’t have a short torso, so I have to find tops that are longer than usual to pull this look off. So, let’s look at some long tops that meet this criteria!

This knit is a slight variation to last year’s popular Jemima Knit (which I own four of!). They come in so many different colours and are $59.95 each. I’ve styled this with the Big W tights and these Kmart boots that retail for $35.

Wear a mini dress as a top

My other tip is to wear a mini dress as a long top.

Quite often mini dresses are so short that sometimes you can get away with wearing one as a ‘long top’ with leggings. Here are some suggestions to get you thinking!

Cotton On Juliette Roll Neck Knit Mini Dress

You could totally wear this dress with leggings and boots or sneakers. It also comes in black and a creamy white. At $44.99 it’s a steal!

A note on working out clothes

Personally, I don’t follow these rules when I workout as it can be quite uncomfortable exercising in baggy clothes.

Do you follow similar guidelines when wearing leggings? Or perhaps you don’t?
